Lou Dobbs - Mr. Independent
As everyone knows, Lou Dobbs has resigned from CNN. There are plenty of rumors about his intentions, but, as it is very clear from his statement, he is considering to go into politics.
The question is what kind of office will Mr. Independent run for?
There will be congressional elections in 2010, but I doubt that a person of Mr. Dobbs statue will want to be a mere Congressman.
Senatorial and Presidential elections are way off in 2012. This would be clearly the goal for Mr. Dobbs, but it is too early to run for either office.
So, why quite now? Obviously, Lou Dobbs could have continued bashing the US political system and drum up support for his future campaigns for free while working for CNN.
I think the most probable answer is that Lou Dobbs wants to start a new political party. As we had been posting to this site and as the recent mid-term elections indicate, the country is ready for an alternative to the de facto one-party system we currently have.
I believe Mr. Dobbs' views represent views of average American and are very similar to that of Great Task platform. For example, he was the first one to drum up awareness to the outsourcing of American jobs years before it became a widely-discussed issue. That's why The Organization for American Workers (TORAW) had awarded him the Man of the Year title in 2003.
Critics of Mr. Dobbs would claim that he is against immigration. I disagree. He is against illegal immigration, as are vast majority of American citizens.
Mr. Dobbs was inviting an impressive range of independent thinkers to his show, although, the quality of guests has deteriorated in the recent year or so. That's why it is important to wait and see what kind of agenda Mr. Dobbs will put forward if and when he decides to make his political moves.
In any case, his candidacy would be a welcome addition to the otherwise predictable list of politicians dominating the elections. We wish Lou Dobbs the best of luck in his political career.
