Healthcare is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US
The researchers at Harvard Law School and Harvard Medical School published a study that showed lack of affordable healthcare is the leading cause of bankruptcies in the USA. Even people with healthcare insurances were not protected, as insurance policies have co-pays, deductibles, exclusions, etc., and they do not offer protection in case of a major illness.
Although highly readable, articles about the study can be read here, here, and here.
Of course, people without any medical insurance are the most vulnerable. It is estimated that there are almost 50 million people in America who don’t have any healthcare insurance.
The National Coalition on Health Care has some statistics on healthcare coverage that can be found here.
